Wrapped in Futura: Rediscovering Ilford XP1

Ilford XP1 – Chromogenic B&W in Medium Format

🧪 A Glimpse at XP1 in 120

Before there was XP2 Super, there was XP1 — Ilford’s first chromogenic black and white film. Designed for processing in C-41 chemistry, XP1 offered a smoother grain and wider exposure latitude compared to traditional B&W emulsions. This made it ideal for labs and shooters who wanted the monochrome look without the dedicated chemistry.

I recently ran a test roll of expired XP1 in 120 format. Despite its age, it still developed cleanly and delivered a dreamy, soft tonal range with minimal grain — a signature of chromogenic emulsions.

🎞️ Film Characteristics

  • Original Box Speed: ISO 400
  • Processing: C-41 (color negative chemistry)
  • Format: 120 medium format
  • Grain: Fine and soft — distinctly smoother than traditional B&W
  • Dynamic Range: Excellent — can be exposed between ISO 100–800 on the same roll

XP1 handles light with grace. Highlights roll off gently, shadows stay open, and tonal transitions are smooth — a different flavor of monochrome, but one with depth.

I have a limited number of expired XP1 rolls in 120 format — a rare find, especially in good condition. You can find them here:

There’s something special about seeing XP1 rendered on a big negative. It’s soft, elegant, and full of quiet drama. A true chromogenic classic — now fading into history, but not forgotten.
